Grave Concerns
Grave Concerns derives from my interest in the prehistoric and in the remains of pre-modern humans. I was especially interested in images that I found online depicting grave sites and skeletal remains that were dated to be close to 100,000 years old. Many of these skeletal remains are striking because of the tenderness that the bereaved showed to the deceased in the fetal-like positioning of the bodies. I was even more moved by the delicate gestures of skeletal hands that I found in many of these images, and in the tenderness the deceased could be perceived to be showing to themselves in imagined acts self-care that extend to the afterlife. By printing a collage of myself with a elements of varied skeletal remains onto fabric, the work becomes partially enclosed in its own shroud.
